What Is a Class 10,000 Cleanroom?

A Class 10000 Cleanroom, also known as an ISO 7 Cleanroom, is a meticulously controlled environment designed to reduce contamination from airborne particles, microbes and other pollutants. It is used in industries like electronics, aerospace, medical device manufacturing and pharmaceuticals, where even minimal particulate matter can affect product quality.

Class 10,000 Cleanroom Requirements

Although the Class 10,000 cleanroom is less restrictive than other cleanrooms, allowing higher particle counts and minimal protective gear, workers must still adhere to specific requirements:  

  • The Airborne Particle Limits cannot exceed 352,000 particles per cubic meter, equivalent to 10,000 particles per cubic foot of air (≥0.5 microns).  
  • 60 to 90 air changes per hour are required to flush out contaminants and maintain particle levels.  
  • High-efficiency particle air (HEPA) is required to remove 99.97% of particles (≥0.5 microns) using an air velocity of 10-15 feet per minute.

  • Air filtering units are equipped with HEPA filters able to remove particulate matter.  
  • The ceiling grid is built from tightly sealed tiles designed to fit securely in the grid, preventing external contamination.  
  • The walls are made from non-porous surfaces like vinyl, high-pressure laminates, fiberglass-reinforced plastic, coated steel or aluminum. The wall panels are reinforced with a polystyrene, gypsum or isocyanurate core.
